Topic: Shrimp Fly

This is what we have been killing the trout on in DuLarge, Monegut & Dulac.  It is a copy of the Supreme Hair Shrimp but with a few mods.  I bought this fly last year to fish the Sportsmens League Rodeo.  I had a blast catching trout after trout with the mix of lady fish also.  I found that the shrimps tails would get all tangled up in the hook so I modified it using Clear Seal by Liguid Nails to keep the flexability.  I haven't solved the problem totally yet, but still a work in progress.  I do not want to use epoxy because I fear it will make the tails to stiff.  Any hints on what I could use.  The fly is very easy to tie and it flat out works.  I was always a believer in match the hatch and this is as close as it gets in my opinion.

Re: Shrimp Fly

You mighty try tying a loop of mono or fluorocarbon to stick out behind the hook.  I believe this has worked on some other flies that have a similar tendency.

Re: Shrimp Fly

Neat looking fly.  What are you using for the antennae? Is that black rubber legs? and have you ever weighted the fly
(It looks like the eyes are plastic dumbbells)  Thanks.

Re: Shrimp Fly

Jeff,

This fly in the water looks as close to the real thing as you can get.  I  have in the past used an extra small dumbbell lead eyes but found that the fly would sink to quickly.  The other problem that I was having was the tail would get tangled in the hook when you catch a fish and it would just screw the whole fly up.  I have done alot of experimenting with this fly so that it can be used over and over.  I have changed to plastic black dumbbell eyes, I have also inserted into the tail and tying it to the shank of the hook a small piece leadwire leader to keep the tail in place.  the belly of the shrimp is hot pink chenelle and the antennae is black rubber legs.  I don't use epoxy on the head on the shrimp due to not haveing a drying wheel.  Instead I use a hot glue gun and seems to work perfectly.  The only weight in this fly is the hook and the small piece of wire leader.  I find that the fly looks more realistic and doesn't sink as fast like this.  If you were to order the original supreme hair shrimp it doesn't have any weight to it at all either.  This pattern is very easy to tie.  I have several ready to go and they will be very much in use this weekend for the Terrebonne Sportsman's League Rodeo.

Re: Shrimp Fly

Tie a loop of 20 pound mono on the hook BEFORE you tie in the tail..the loop should ride UNDER the tail of the fly and will help it from fouling during the cast and if a fish takes it. I have used this extensively on any fly with a rabbit zonker tail or extended material tail and it works very well. The trick is to get the loop long enough to support the tail...usually a quarter to one half inch. I disagree on fluoro...to soft..use MASON HARD MONO! it is invisble to the fish anyway and is sturdy enough to handle the support you require...think shrimp bustierre. Also it is GREAT for mono weed gaurds on any fly!

Re: Shrimp Fly

Kyle thanks for the input.  I had used a smalle piece of wire leader in the tail section and it work flawlessly this past weekend.  The thing I find about the lead wire is that I can get the fly to sink evenly through the water if needed to get the fly down.  It gives it a more realistic look i feel.

Re: Shrimp Fly

Hi I just join and was looking at your shrimp and would like to find out how to tie it. A recipe would be great. Thanks mike

Re: Shrimp Fly

My belief is that you are correct about epoxy for the tail.   Epoxy would make it completely stiff and dead to movement.

Re: Shrimp Fly

Mike,

I am workin on a step by step process for you.  Just give me a little time.

Re: Shrimp Fly

Stephen,

I have a couple of questions about tying your shrimp fly:

1.  “Small Piece of wire leader cut to the size shrimp you want to tie”  Is this the lead core of a trolling line, or is it lead wire normally utilized in tying, and if so what size: 0.10, 0.1.5, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, or 0.35?

2.  “Tie in a thin piece of wire leader from the back of the eyes down the shank to the bend.”  Does this mean the wire was tyed in on top of the hook shank from the eyes to the point where the hook starts to curve downward?  I ask, because the photo seems to show the wire extending down to a point about halfway down the curve, or is that just a little hotglue on the bend of the hook shank?

3.  “Cut off extra thread and use that to tie in the tail at the end of the wire leader, but make sure to tie the thread where it is on the wire leader.”  Again, the point where the hook starts to curve downward?

4.  “I had used a small piece of wire leader in the tail section and it work flawlessly this past weekend.”  Where did this wire end?… At the tie-in / glue-in point of the abdomen/pedicle?

It is cool looking little fly.

Thanks,

Kyle

Re: Shrimp Fly

i used it at big lake and caught rather well 5 trout and i was just wading while everyone else swam. Pretty good for a kid with a 6wt rod.
